Sumter County, where the music runs deep, and community is family. This Master Plan concept for a multi-purpose community park in Americus, Georgia is exactly that! A place where the community can gather, a venue for artist to shine, and a park that remains true to its natural beauty. This Master Plan stems from a vision from the OneSumter Board to create a destination that is inspirational, sustainable, functional, and above all, a place for the community of Sumter County to come together and celebrate.
The amenities that encompass this design include an amphitheater, entrance plaza and event venue, dog park, children’s playground, ample open space for passive play, and all other “must have” components, including the guitar entrance plaza paying tribute to Pearly Brown, a local musician and icon whose talents were oppressed during his lifetime.
The 4.61-acre site was first the location of Habitat for Humanity’s original Headquarters and their Global Village & Discovery Center. The site hosts several structures originally intended to communicate impoverished living conditions across the world. The organization wanted to ensure any future development of the site was unrelated to their Global Village campaign. This meant any repurposed existing structures could maintain their foundation and framing but needed to be re-envisioned aesthetically. To complete the transfer of property, a concept for the intended use of the site and structures was required.
The amphitheater scales as one of the largest in the region and offers a unique outdoor experience to attend shows and performances hosted by local entities and travelers alike. The Grand Lawn provides the park with a flex green space for when the amphitheater is not being used. The lawn can accommodate a multitude of activities and events such as: picnics, lawn games, yoga and art classes, movie nights, family reunions, and/or just relaxing in the sun. The terraces provide hardscape interest that define the space and help maintain the integrity of the sloped lawn overtime.
This Master Plan is a complete vision of the site’s potential; however, a Phasing Plan was also provided which strategically sectors the construction scheduling to accommodate our client needs. This Master Plan should be used as a guide and reference tool as each phase comes to fruition to ensure that the proper circulation, programming, and general flow of construction is being met.
